Ask Patents is a question and answer site for people interested in improving and participating in the patent system. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm not an expert in patents... but a software engineer who works on network protocols.

Just wondering how come this patent is approved because of the similarities with SMB protocol implementation.

In basic this patent talks about transferring a file from one device to another device which is exactly what the SMB protocol does. The patent is filled on Apr,7,2009 (according to Google page) and the SMB protocol is designed around 1990 (according to Wiki).

Any thoughts?

Your post does not include the patent number so we don't know what you are referring to. I looked up patents filed on that day that relate to networks and of the handful none jumped out as clearly bring one you might be talking about. –  George White Feb 5 at 7:13
