Ask Patents is a question and answer site for people interested in improving and participating in the patent system. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have developed a digital network, similar to a social network, but with a few important differences, and now I am drafting a provisional patent. I'll go to an attorney before submitting, but I want to draft as much as I can myself.

I have started describing my network and I feel like I'm on the right track with it, but there is one aspect that I think could be a separate patent, and I'm not sure if I should/must extract it and make is the subject of a second provisional application.

Specifically it deals with an algorithm (or method?) that suggests to a user other users they may wish to follow. My digital network would still be novel and useful without the algorithm, so it seems to me that I could separate it out, but should I?
