Ask Patents is a question and answer site for people interested in improving and participating in the patent system. It's 100% free, no registration required.

In the USA, and Canada, we have a very low bar when applying for patents. For example, in the USA, one could apply for a provisional patent, and wait a year before applying for a utility or design patent. Is there a similar process in other countries, China, Japan, Korea? Also, when applying for an all European Union patent, a patent that applies all across the EU, what is the process for applying for an utility patent?
