What is the patent owner law in US? I think the "anything you invent" would be limited to being related to the scope of the work that you do (or the company's products), and/or made use of company resources. Say for example, one works at Apple on their mobile software, and they invent something related to a new way to manufacture furniture. If company resources were not used to produce this patent, then they would not be required to assign this invention to the company. |

Are there any companies that assist in pre-patent research? There probably are companies for that, but I think a patent search should be carried out by whoever is filing the patent The one exception being if that person if totally tech-phobic (in case the patent is a non technology related), in which case they need to have someone who understands the patent, adn can Google, help them with the search. Lawyers are going to be very expensive and you know your idea much better than them so yo are paying them to learn from you and then they are just going to go to Google and locate relevant patents. Writing up the patent filings is a totally different. |

Does a public discussion related to a patent invalidate the patent Thanks for the very thorough response. So, it seems that it is best to just file a provisional patent with as much detail as possible and then it is OK to discuss in public. |
